Abstract

Abstract The need to define and use network reliability performance metrics arises from the need to compare different measurement results and to measure network behaviour with a reproducible, unambiguous methodology which is independent from transmission technology and implementation aspects. This introductory article aims at presenting the most important network performance and reliability metrics, and methods for measuring them as defined by the standardization bodies such as the IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force) and ITU‐T.
