Abstract

The Welsh Assembly Government Transport Directorate manages the motorways and trunk roads in Wales. The core road networks are focussed around two East/West corridor routes, which form part of the Trans-European Road Network, the A55 (E22) in North Wales and the M4 (E30) in South Wales. The road networks in North and South Wales are continually monitored and managed by two, Assembly owned, traffic management centres (TMCs). SWTMC monitors the M4 and key trunk roads in South Wales, whilst NWTMC provides traffic and tunnel management for the A55 and surrounding areas. A study into the current M4 communications operations recommended the provision of an integrated traffic management and information centre, to enable more proactive management of the road networks and to provide the foundation for future integration of transport services.
