Abstract

AbstractThis article provides an overview of flow and congestion control in communication networks. After emphasizing the importance of these mechanisms for performance and fairness, a taxonomy of flow and congestion control mechanisms is provided. Most common congestion control mechanisms that are being used in today's networks are discussed. Finally, recent developments that yield a mathematical framework for the design and analysis of flow and congestion control mechanisms are summarized. The statements are supported with simple examples and intuitive arguments to improve clarity.
