Abstract

Rain and insects (Rhagoletis cerasi, Drosophila suzukii, wasps) are constant threats to high quality cherry production. In addition, trees can be killed by goat moth (Cossus) or flatheaded woodborer (Capnodis tenebrionis). Reduced use of chemicals and lack of efficacy also hinder control of Cossus and Capnodis. In order to reduce risks caused by these factors and to consistently produce high-quality cherries, we have studied nets of various mesh sizes and structures. For two years we tested the efficacy of a fully-protected orchard by using nets and covers, and in 2013 we tested row-by-row protection.
