Abstract

Northern Ireland is situated on the western edge of Europe and shares a land border with the Republic of Ireland. According to the 2011 census, the population of Northern Ireland is approximately 1.8 million. In terms of community background, 48.3% of Northern Irish-born residents identied as having a Protestant community background and 45.1% a Catholic community background. In racial terms, the population of Northern Ireland is almost exclusively white (98.2%), with minority-ethnic groups comprising less than 2% of the total population.
