Abstract

Baby birds prefer local dialects. Songbirds have predispositions to learn songs of their own species over others, but what about species that have regional dialects? And how different are responses of baby and adult birds? We show that golden-crowned sparrow chicks, before song learning, treat foreign songs like heterospecific songs. Adults, on the other hand, show graded responses to local, foreign and heterospecific songs. This study tells us how song responses change across life stages.
