Abstract

There is no question that in any type of stress the changes in ascorbic acid and cholesterol content of the adrenals are due to increased secretion of ACTH by the anterior hypophysis. It is also well known (1, 2) that the majority of stresses act by stimulation of the hypothalamus, but it seems that some intense stressing procedures might release ACTH despite extensive destruction of the median eminence of various mammals (2). In order to obtain information on the site of action of Xirradiation, we have studied the reaction of the adrenals in the hypophysectomized rat with pituitary transplants in the anterior chamber of the eye. As a control, we have also investigated the changes in the adrenals grafted in the eye of adrenalectomized rats. In a third series of experiments, we used newborn rats, the adrenals of which do not respond to stresses because the control of the hypothalamus on the anterior pituitary is not yet established (3, 4).
