Abstract
Dulcitol accumulation associated with swelling occurs in the peripheral nerves of rats fed a 40 per cent galactose diet. These alterations are associated with a motor nerve conduction velocity defect which is reversible on withdrawal of galactose from the diet. These findings suggest that the accumulation of sugar alcohol plays an important role in the etiology of galactosemic neuropathy.
