Abstract

Members of the genus Nepovirus (sub-family Comovirinae, family Secoviridae, order Picornavirales) are plant icosahedral viruses with a bipartite positive-strand RNA genome. Each RNA encodes a single polyprotein which is cleaved by the viral protease. RNA replication occurs in association with membrane vesicles derived from the plant endoplasmic reticulum. Nepoviruses move from cell to cell as intact virus particles via the formation of tubular structures that traverse the cell wall. Many, but not all, nepoviruses are transmitted by nematodes and most nepoviruses are also seed-transmitted. Nepoviruses induce diseases of economic importance in a variety of horticultural crops.
