Abstract
The new millennium will be characterized by revolutionary changes in medical practice, including nephrology. These changes will occur as a result of the translation of fundamental discoveries or developments in molecular genetics, informatics, cyberbiology, and cyberpharmacology. The dialysis population may shrink as a consequence of new and effective therapies or preventive strategies in renal disease. The organization of medical practice will evolve into new, integrated systems of care. The disparity between the “haves” and the “have-nots” will widen. Profound challenges and opportunities await nephrology in the new millennium.
