Abstract

The available Slater parameters for Er3+ in eleven activated or self-activated crystals have been used to evaluate the nephelauxetic ratios beta k(k=2, 4, 6) in respect to the gaseous ion Er IV. The position of the previous reference, the aquo ion, has also been determined. The results indicate that (i) in almost all cases beta k<or=1 and (ii) the nephelauxetic effect in Er3+ is weaker than that in Pr3+. The radial expectation values (rk)4f have been calculated on the basis of the dielectric screening model and found to be of the same order of magnitude as those obtained by other methods such as non-relativistic and relativistic computations and experimental estimates.
