Abstract

This chapter presents a discussion on the main representatives of NTS school of thought and situates Neotraditional Salafism (NTSm) in relation to several issues that formed the subject matter of the previous chapter, including the historical context behind the emergence of the premodern ahl hadith and ahl-ra’y/madhhab schools of thought; NTS understanding of the concept of Salafism; NTS ideas in relation to what constitutes legitimate knowledge (’ilm) and its sources; NTS concept of the nature and scope of the concept of Sunna and the NTS’s own self-description of their manhaj. In this chapter, I will argue that the NTS approach to, and the interpretation of, the Islamic tradition is based upon the Salafi-revivalist premodern ahl-hadith manhaj.
