Abstract

In Rowthorn’s words, Marx’s basic theoretical approach differs from Ricardo’s in that Marx used the concept of a ‘mode of production’ (Rowthorn, R. (1974) ‘Neo-Classicism and Marxism’, New Left Review , 86: 74) and accordingly envisaged capitalism ‘as a mode of production and distribution’, and not as a mere ‘mode of distribution’ as Ricardo did ( op. cit. , 83). As his quotations from Marx show ( op. cit. , 80, 83-7), Rowthorn appears to mean here what Marx expressed as follows:the laws concerning surplus-value – with a given working day and labour intensity – were rigorously formulated, for the fi rst time, by Ricardo [but] he knows no change either in the length of the working day, or in the intensity of labour.
