Abstract

ABSTRACT Cyperus sesquiflorus is commonly called fragrant kyllinga, fragrant spikesedge, or fragrant flatsedge. It is a cespitose perennial herb with a Pantropical distribution. In Brazil, it is a native species, being commonly named fragrant grass due to its aromatic content. In this study, the essential oil (EO) of C. sesquiflorus was extracted by hydrodistillation with a Clevenger apparatus. Yields of the samples ranged between 0.12% and 0.27% (v/w) oils from fresh and dehydrated whole flowering plants (with roots) and the oil was analyzed by Gas Chromatography/-Mass spectrometry/flame ionization detection (GC-MS/FID) and Gas chromatography/Mass spectroscopy (GC/MS). The main constituent of the oil, neopetasan (3S,4aR,5S)-4a,5-dimethyl-3-(prop-1-en-2-yl)-4,4a,5,6,7,8 hexahydronaphthalen-2(3 H)-one, was isolated by preparative thin layer chromatography (PTLC) and its structure was elucidated by extensive one- and two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance (1D/2D-NMR) (COSY, HSQC, HMBC, and NOESY) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy in combination with MS and comparison with literature data.
