Abstract

The ductus arteriosus is a vascular connection between the pulmonary artery and the aorta in the fetus. After birth, the ductus can become an important lifeline for neonates suffering from ductal-dependent congenital heart defects. For these infants, patency of the ductus arteriosus is necessary for their survival in the perioperative period. For them, early initiation of therapy to prolong ductal patency can be lifesaving, providing the time needed for initial stabilization and transfer to a tertiary care center where corrective surgery may be possible. 1 Borowitz SM Buck ML.
