Abstract

Estimates of the incidence of thrombotic events in children are increasing both because of early recognition and advances in supportive care of children at high risk. Newborns are at relatively high risk of thrombotic events, with an estimated annual incidence of 0.5/10,000 newborns, 4 times that of children of all ages. 1 We report the incidental finding of a thrombus in the main pulmonary arteries of 3 newborns discovered by echocardiography. These thrombi were found in association with presumed premature closure of the ductus arteriosus (DA) in utero, raising the possibility of an association of thrombus formation with DA closure in these patients.
