Abstract

(N Engl J Med. 2022;387:2085–2086) Opioid use during pregnancy continues to rise and result in adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes. Buprenorphine and methadone are medications used for opioid use disorder (OUD) treatment to help prevent risks such as overdose and preterm birth. While methadone was used for decades to treat perinatal OUD, it suffers from several issues. The primary issue is that it can only be given by federally licensed drug and alcohol treatment programs, which can be a barrier for many women requiring treatment. Another issue is that it is a long-acting drug.
