Abstract
This was the first case of neonatal herpes simplex limited to the cornea. The infection responded satisfactorily to locally administered idoxuridine as does the epithelial disease in the adult. While the presence of a sufficient level of passively transferred circulating maternal antibodies to herpes simplex protects the neonate from a primary infection, absence of antibody titer does not invariably result in the disseminated fatal disease.
