Abstract

Newborn hearing screening programmes are expanding worldwide and children are being identified at the earliest possible stage. Universal neonatal hearing screening was officially launched in Bulgaria during autumn in 2015. Despite professional agreement among professionals and relevant institutions on the need for early detection of hearing impairment, little progress has been made in terms of reducing the average age at which this occurs. This fact has provoked our desire to conduct a study to determine how neonatal hearing screening is carried out and the real benefits of its introduction in our country over a period of four years (2016–2019). The full analysis has been published separately and in this paper we will present some of the most important data obtained.
