[ ]at a moment when elected strong men (Putin, Duterte, Bolsonaro, Orban, Erdogan, Netanyahu, Modi, Trump) seem to dominate world headlines, and when there are also multiple crises (in health, economy, environment, migration, security) that require urgent responses, it is worth examining the debates of the interwar era again Discussion focused on maintaining open and competitive markets, restricting disturbances following from financial cycles or financialization, limiting the destructive consequences of political lobbying, and combating a narrow focus on homo oeconomicus The debates of the last thirty years have some analogies with the dismal mental world of the 1930s Since the 1980s, a cycle of intense globalization and technical change has produced powerful monopolies driven by network advantages, a destructive financial cycle, a massive extension of special interest lobbying (in large part to preserve the position of those monopolies), and a widespread impoverishment of the concept of what it is to be human [ ]this article investigates neoliberalism's trajectory from Prophet to Teacher rather than treating Neoliberalism as Whipping Boy
