Neolecta, a fruit-body-producing genus of the basal ascomycetes, as shown by SSU and LSU rDNA sequences

Abstract

The basal position of the fruit-body-forming Neolecta in the ascomycete system is confirmed. The SSU rDNA sequence from N. irregularis supports the earlier published sequence of N. vitellina , for which the order Neolectales was erected. Partial sequences of LSU rDNA also confirm that Neolecta forms part of a sistergroup to other fruit-body-forming ascomycetes and the budding yeasts. Neolecta is suggested as a model organism for studies of the regulation of ascomal ontogeny and physiology.
