Abstract
SummaryIn the last 3–4 years severely diseased plants of Glen Clova red raspberry have been found, often in large patches, in crops in several parts of the UK. Affected plants are severely stunted and many of their leaves show mosaic, yellow veinbanding or chlorotic ringspot symptoms. In England, Wales and N. Ireland plants of Mailing Admiral raspberry showing similar symptoms were also found. Affected raspberry plants usually become economically unproductive 2–3 years after symptoms become apparent. The disease in Glen Clova plants in Scotland is caused by raspberry ringspot virus whereas that in Glen Clova and Mailing Admiral plants in the rest of the UK is caused by arabis mosaic virus. Possible reasons for the recent increase in occurrence of disease outbreaks, and the control of the nematode-borne viruses involved, are discussed.
