Abstract
1. 1. The enzymes, catalase, isocitrate lyase, d-aminoacid oxidase and α-hydroxyacid oxidase, are present in the mitochondrial fraction prepared from the free-living nematode, Turbatrix aceti. Urate oxidase is absent. 2. 2. Peroxisomes could not be separated from the nematode mitochondria using a 30–60% sucrose gradient, though rat liver peroxisomes were readily distinguishable under the same conditions. A variety of other gradients failed to separate the nematode organelles. 3. 3. The differential release of catalase and isocitrate lyase compared to fumarase, as well as the presence of the above enzymes, strongly support the idea that peroxisomes are present in T. aceti.
