Abstract

— During the research for nematicidal substances in higher plants, two species of plant, Carthamus tinctorius L. (Compositae) and Daphne odora Thunb. (Thymelaeaceae), were found to show nematicidal activity. The isolation of the nematicidal components was guided by the toxicities against rice white tip nematode, Aphelenchoides besseyi, in immersion test. Two nematicidal polyacetylenes, 3-cis,11-trans-trideca-l,3,11-triene-5,7,9-triyne and 3-trans,11-trans-trideca-1,3,11-triene-5,7,9-triyne were isolated from flowers of C, tinctorius and two nematicidal diterpenes having an ortho-ester group, named odoracin and odoratrin, were isolated from roots of D, odora. The research results of nematicidal substances from plants are reviewed and discussed.
