Abstract

Polymer liquid crystals involve new physics since molecular shape changes as a result of orientational ordering. We describe the molecular basis of nematic elastomers where such molecular shape changes are paramount and couple to mechanical effects. We review classical networks and the relevant parts of polymer liquid crystals physics.
