Abstract

In December 1999 Page Putnam Miller interviewed Nellie Longsworth, who recently retired as president of Preservation Action. As the very respected leader of the only national grassroots lobby organization devoted exclusively to historic preservation issues, Longsworth is a pioneer in advocating the conservation of our nation's built environment. Her comments on how she led a fledgling organization to become a major force in the formation of historic preservation policy, her discussion of tactics and strategies, her reflections on teaching in a graduate program in this field, and her vision for the future provide valuable insights for public historians.
