Abstract

The Neighborhood Leadership Workshop was a 54-hour leadership training program for residents in the Montgomery-Hyde Park area of St. Louis. Over 150 black and white residents, predominately low-income, participated in the program. It was developed and operated by an Area Community Development Specialist from the University of Missouri Extension Division and staff of the Montgomery-Hyde Park NAC, Inc.Leadership was defined as a shared function in groups and, thus, a leader was defined as a person who helped a group identify and reach a goal. At least one-third of the participants became involved in neighborhood activities following their participation in the workshop.
