Abstract

The demographic and social characteristics of Negroes in large Northern cities of the United States have been studied and well documented within the profession. Negroes in smaller metropolitan areas have been generally neglected except by the most broad demographic studies. Medium-sized cities such as Madison, Wisconsin, Fall River, Massachusetts and Cedar Rapids, Iowa tend to have small pockets (1-5 per cent) of Negro population. Pennsylvania has an unusual number of similar cities, viz. Allentown, Altoona, Bethlehem, Erie, Harrisburg, Lancaster, Reading, Scranton and Wilkes Barre. In the past heavy concentrations of conservative ethnic groups in Pennsylvania (e.g. German and Scotch-Irish) may have inhibited a heavy Negro in-migration from the South. Certainly the Negro community of Allentown, Pennsylvania, which is the primary concem of this paper, has never had a rapid influx of Negroes.
