Abstract
A discussion on coping with insecurity using psychoanalytic social theory is presented. It argues that, while individuals deal with insecurity in one way or another, they do so while utilizing the available repertoire of cultural resources. Thus, the qualitative features of the available cultural set are crucial aspects of societies' attempts to deal with insecurity. The issue is discussed with reference to incidents of global terrorism, which often blur the friend-enemy distinction.
