Abstract

Life expectancy in the USSR reached 71 years (64.5 for males and 75 for females) in 1964 and then declined to 70 in 1970. Although no official figures of life expectancy have been published in the Soviet Union since 1970 it is possible to estimate that life expectancy declined further to about 68 years in 1983 (62.5 for males and 73.5 for females). The decline was due partly to an increase in infant mortality and partly to an increase of mortality among the middle aged and elderly groups and reflects problems in public health. (EXCERPT)
