Abstract

Abstract This chapter examines negative peer experiences (e.g., peer victimization, being ignored or excluded, and direct and indirect rejection) in adolescents with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Discussion is concentrated on adolescents with higher cognitive and language abilities, with a focus on providing insights and suggestions for the next phase of studies that will inform interventions targeting negative experiences in this group. The chapter describes negative peer experiences in terms of nomenclature, general findings, and important issues for adolescents with ASD; identifies common methodological issues with previous studies on this topic; presents a study on the impact of peer victimization in adolescents with ASD using obese adolescents as a comparison group; and finally, provides suggestions for advancing research in this topic area.
