Abstract

The anxiety disorders might be best conceptualized along a spectrum ranging from low to high negative affectivity and comorbidity load. Multiple indicators of negative valence system (NVS) activity may show different, even opposing patterns of response along this spectrum. Greater amygdala activity to negative stimuli has been observed among patients with higher negative affectivity, whereas blunted response has been observed in the late positive potential (LPP), an event-related potential that tracks emotional salience, and eyeblink startle, a marker of defensive reactivity.
