Abstract
ABSTRACT HYALITE Canyon near Bozeman, Montana was the site for a study of the needle biomass of 27 lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta Dough var latifolia Engelm) trees. The allometric relationships between green needle weight and tree dimensions were developed and compared with other research results. The equation for needle weight and D2H had a flatter slope for these 10-14 year-old trees as compared to a 100 year-Old stand studied by Johnstone (1971). The equations developed were used to predict needle biomass for the stand by using a mean tree value and by using every tree value. The needle biomass was underpredicted more often than overpredicted using mean tree values. Using every tree value in the equations, the needle biomass was overpredicted as often as underpre-dicted.
