Abstract

As the success of palliative surgery for congenital heart lesions has increased and survival is greater, attention has turned to other aspects of long-term outcomes with a focus on neurodevelopmental outcomes. In this volume of The Journal, Wehrle et al present an interesting comparison. They evaluated the neurodevelopmental outcomes at entry to school of children with congenital heart disease in comparison with children born very preterm at entry to school. They found that neurodevelopmental problems are similar between the two groups, but children with congenital heart disease receive fewer therapies to support their neurodevelopment.
