Abstract

AbstractInteractions between Chalara elegans and a sterile hyaline basidiomycete (SHB) were studied by light, scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Young colonies of C. elegans were quickly overgrown by the mycoparasite, with lysis of, hyphae and conidia. Direct penetration of host hyphae and conidia was observed, but simple coiling around these also occurred. Chlamydospore development was inhibited, but 12.5% of mature chlamydospores were able to survive attack for 120 days. Chlamydospore germination was apparently stimulated by the SHB, whereupon lysis followed. Evidence of invasion of intact chlamydospores is also presented.
