Abstract

Introduction: Vomiting and abdominal pain are overlapping clinical symptoms of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) and acute pancreatitis. Pancreatic enzymes are not routinely measured during the initial evaluation of DKA, though modest elevation of serum lipase is common. Acute pancreatitis is reported in about 2% of patients with DKA, and typically resolves with conservative management. Necrotizing pancreatitis (NP) is exceedingly rare in children. We are aware of only one other reported pediatric case of DKA associated NP.
