Abstract

Introduction: Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a major source of morbidity and mortality amongst neonates. Many patients are successfully managed medically while others require surgical intervention. For some, the bowel injury can be devastating resulting in significant morbidity and mortality. Approximately 10% of patients will develop NEC totalis (NEC-T), which is a rapidly progressive form of NEC involving most if not the entire bowel.
