Abstract

Purpureocillium lilacinum is a fungi that is commonly found as an environmental mould that rarely causes infection in humans. When it does infect humans it can cause ocular, nasal sinus, cutaneous and systemic disease and is associated with contact lenses and immunosuppression. This case report is of a 71-year-old male with a one year history of a left, red, painful eye that was thought to be autoimmune and treated with prednisolone and methotrexate. A scleral biopsy showed necrotising granulomatous inflammation with budding yeast forms.
