Abstract

The bacterial causes of influenzal pneumonia were investigated in two epidemics of influenza A (in 1957 and 1969-70) by cultural examination of lung tissue post mortem . The results suggested that staphylococcal pneumonia was the principal cause of death in young persons, but that, at least in the 1969-70 epidemic, pneumococcal pneumonia played a significant part in influenzal deaths in the elderly.
