Abstract

In terms of integrative stylistics the article compares the artistic texts of I. Nechuy-Levytsky and V. Pidmohylny which present linguistic pictures of the city of Kyiv. It was found that in the studied works the linguistic image of Kyiv is represented by proper names – toponyms, names of sacred and architectural structures, spatial objects, tokens with colorful semantics, as well as comparative-metaphorical structures based on individual author’s associations. The unfolding of the linguistic image of Kyiv is traced through the metonymic use of the conceptual token ‘city’ where the seme ‘large number of people’ is actualized, and through verbal images of city residents, what both writers resort to, drawing pictures of large numbers of people. The influence of I. Nechuy-Levytsky’s linguistic creation on V. Pidmohylny’s linguistic thinking is emphasized and this is evidenced by the textual echoes of the novel «City» with the linguistic image of the city in I. Nechuy-Levytsky’s works. Quotes-allusions, found in the text of V. Pidmohylny, make reference to the precedent text, to the proto-documentary. Verbal reproduction of the fragment of proto-documentary in allusive images is a few scattered in the text supporting lexemes, which serve as impetus for recognizing semantic similarities. We can speak about the continuity of statements, which testify to the deep connections of the language with the intellectual achievements of the nation, including the treasures of the Ukrainian literary language. The descriptions of Kyiv recorded in the works of I. Nechuy-Levytsky and V. Pidmohylny are filled with the linguistic realities of the time and sensual impulses of writers who expanded the stylistic possibilities of the Ukrainian literary language and affirmed its aesthetic values through original linguistic thinking and the practice of creating verbal associative images.
