Abstract

Objective: To compare the short-term efficacy and safety of a starting dose of nebulized either 5 or 10 mg salbutamol given to adult patients with acute severe asthma. Design: Prospective randomized controlled study. Setting: Emergency department in a university hospital. Patients and interventions: Thirty adult patients with acute severe asthma were included. They were assigned to receive either 5 mg (S5 group) or 10 mg (S10 group) of nebulized salbutamol in association with hydrocortisone and oxygen. Endpoints: Changes in pulmonary function were assessed by a calculated clinical index of acute asthma severity and peak expiratory flow. Clinical and functional parameters were recorded at baseline and 30 min after the start of nebulization. Safety of both dosing regimens was assessed by the changes in heart rate, blood pressure and serum potassium concentration.
