Abstract

Several years of sea surface temperature data (1997–2003) for the coast of Antofagasta Bay—a semi-enclosed bay in northern Chile—were analyzed in order to f...

  • The warm waters of Antofagasta Bay are clearly evident in satellite imagery

  • We have shown that this is a permanent feature, with surface waters persistently warmer than along the open coast. Though this warm feature is found immediately downwind of Jorgillo Point, the maximum temperatures are found at La Rinconada at the downstream end of the bay

Summary

Introduction

Wind-driven coastal upwelling is observed along many coasts worldwide It is strong and persistent in the major upwelling regions found off the mid-latitude west coasts of major continents (e.g., the Humboldt System off the coasts of Chile and Peru) and results in cold, nutrient-rich marine environments characterized by high levels of productivity and biomass (Fonseca and Farías 1987, Barbieri et al 1995).
