Abstract

Neptunium dioxide is paramagnetic above 25 K, where a phase transition of hitherto unknown nature occurs. Below 25 K the magnetic moment at an ion is exceptionally small, ≈ 0.01μ B, and the susceptibility does not diverge. The possibility is investigated that the magnetic moments disappear because of an interplay of a quadrupolar ordering and the particular value of she crystal field. If this is the case, a lattice distortion as in UO 2 should occur.
