Abstract

An atomically clean and ordered Ru(0001) surface with sharp low energy electron diffraction (LEED) spots, dispersing bands in angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, and the intensity-voltage (I-V) curves from LEED similar to the data existing in literature has been obtained by nearly-grazing-incidence-high-temperature sputtering at 973 K. This method of surface preparation is advantageous because it requires significantly lower temperature compared to 1800–1300 K used earlier, and also does not require any oxygen exposure. Both from the experiment as well as Monte Carlo calculations, the efficacy of the nearly-grazing incidence angle of sputtering (70°) is shown.
