Abstract

In this chapter titled “Near-infrared Spectroscopy as Process Analytical Technology in Continuous Solid Dosage Form Manufacturing” the fundamentals of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) and the mainstream and emerging NIRS analyzer technologies for process analytical technology (PAT) applications are described. The different measurement locations for process monitoring and control of solid dosage form manufacturing using NIRS are discussed in a separate section. The implementation of an in-line NIR spectrometer inside the tablet press for blend uniformity and tablet content uniformity monitoring is explained in detail. This chapter elaborates on how NIRS can be used as a PAT tool for advanced process control of solid dosage form manufacturing. A separate section explains how the maintenance of chemometric models using NIRS data is performed. The chapter concludes with the future developments that will drive the adoption of NIRS as a PAT tool.
