Abstract

This review articles describes the progress made over the past decade and a bit on the synthesis, characterization, and (potential) applications of quantum dots that have optical transitions in the near-infrared. It is to some extent focused on lead chalcogenide quantum dots, because most progress has been made here. In addition, the most common characterization techniques are briefly discussed, as well as current and future applications, such as in photovoltaic devices (“solar cells”), in light-emitting diodes, and as biolabels. I have tried to cite many reviews for further reading as a way to compensate for the occasional conciseness.
