Abstract

The acoustic field of a baffled piston source of any shape and with nonuniform velocity distribution is considered, utilizing a generalized version of the impulse response approach developed by Stepanishen [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 49, 1629–1638 (1971)], and with emphasis in obtaining analytical results and general properties. Effects of amplitude shading and rigidity at the edge are investigated for planar sources. Asymptotic farfield expressions are obtained, which show how the shape of the pulse as well as that of the source do influence the farfield directivity. Nonplanar sources are also considered briefly.
