Abstract

Excitation of the 3 3D state of helium by electrons with anenergyof 370 meV above threshold is studied experimentally usingthe electron-photon polarization correlation method andtheoretically using the convergent close-coupling (CCC) andR-matrix with pseudo-states (RMPS) methods. Stokes parametersand associated coherence parameters are presented. Despitedifficulties associated with a sharp resonance in the crosssection at this energy, generally good agreement is obtainedbetween experiment and the calculations. At small scatteringangles the results show a violation of the propensity rule forangular momentum transfer. CCC and RMPS calculations have alsobeen performed at 22 and 24 eV for the 2 1P state andare compared with earlier angular correlation data.
