Abstract

The general expressions for the velocity potential, particle velocity, sound pressure, mean-square sound pressure, intensity, and sound power describing the sound field of a turbulent region are derived starting from Lighthill's fundamental relation for the density fluctuations in the medium outside the turbulent region. The mean-square sound pressure and intensity of the lateral and longitudinal quadrupole components of the near- and far-sound field are discussed in detail and for shear flows a correction to the sound pressure measured in the near field is given. These expressions should be useful in the interpretation of noise data taken close to jets and turbulent boundary layers.
