Abstract

MCCDPIV measurements of the in-plane velocity components and out-of-plane vorticity for two elliptic jets of aspect ratio of 2 and 3 exhausting normally into a cross flow with velocity ratios ranging from 3 to 5 have been carried out. The purpose is to obtain quantitative data on the vortex pairing process which occurs along the leading edge of the cross flow/jet shear layer interface. The results show that for elliptic jets in cross flow with VR⩾3, which have their major axis aligned in the direction of the cross flow, there is an increase in the local entrainment of the cross flow fluid during the vortex pairing.
